F1 Malaysia 2026 Guide: What to Bring & What to Do

Formula 1 is back in Malaysia. For the first time since 2017, the roar of F1 engines returns to the PETRONAS Sepang International Circuit this weekend, 2–4 October 2026.

There's a twist: officially it's the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia 2026. The race was moved from Bahrain to Sepang because of the conflict in the Middle East, and Bahrain is funding it so it keeps the Bahrain name, but it's 100% a Malaysian race weekend.

Whether you're a die-hard fan who remembers Sepang's golden years or you're going to your very first Grand Prix, this guide covers everything: what to pack, what to leave at home, how to get there, what to do all weekend, and how to survive the heat, the rain and the traffic.

Heads up: this is a daytime race, not a night race like Singapore. The race starts at 3 PM — the hottest part of the day and prime time for Malaysia's afternoon thunderstorms.

What to bring to Sepang: the F1 Malaysia packing checklist

October in Sepang means roughly 32°C, very high humidity and a good chance of a sudden downpour. Pack for sun and rain.

The essentials

  • ✅ Your e-ticket — saved offline on your phone and screenshotted (mobile data crawls when 100,000 fans arrive at once)
  • ✅ MyKad — compulsory if you bought a MyKad-rate ticket; it can be checked at the gate
  • ✅ Power bank — fully charged; you'll use your phone for tickets, photos, maps and e-hailing
  • ✅ Touch 'n Go card / eWallet (topped up) + some cash as backup

Sun protection

  • ✅ Cap or hat
  • ✅ Sunglasses
  • ✅ Sunscreen (non-aerosol, SPF 50)
  • ✅ Light, breathable clothes — your team jersey works great
  • ✅ Cooling towel or small handheld fan

Rain protection

  • ✅ Poncho (not an umbrella — long umbrellas are banned and they block everyone's view)
  • ✅ Small waterproof pouch or zip bag for your phone and wallet
  • ✅ Spare T-shirt and socks if you're on the hillstands

Comfort & health

  • ✅ Earplugs (adults) / ear defenders (kids) — F1 cars are seriously loud up close
  • ✅ Comfortable, closed shoes that can handle wet grass and long walks
  • ✅ Oral rehydration salts / electrolyte sachets
  • ✅ Personal medication, plasters, tissues and wet wipes
  • ✅ Small picnic mat or plastic sheet if you're on the B, C or G Hillstand grass

What NOT to bring (prohibited items)

Every bag is searched at the gate. Save yourself the queue drama and leave these at home:

  • ❌ Outside food and drinks, bottles, cans and anything glass ⚠️ (some guides say one sealed water bottle is allowed — confirm with your ticket email; plan to buy water inside)
  • ❌ Selfie sticks, tripods and drones
  • ❌ Long umbrellas
  • ❌ Air horns, whistles, vuvuzelas, lasers
  • ❌ Walkie-talkies, radio scanners and phone jammers
  • ❌ Fireworks, flares and smoke canisters
  • ❌ Knives, scissors and sharp items
  • ❌ Bicycles, scooters, skateboards and prams
  • ❌ Pets
  • ❌ Political or religious banners, flags or offensive slogans

Tip: there's an ATM at the Welcome Centre, with customer service and lost & found right next to it.

How to get to Sepang International Circuit

Take the KLIA Ekspres from KL Sentral to KLIA Terminal 2 (about 33 minutes), then follow the signs to the Transportation Hub (Express Bus Terminal) for the official event shuttle to the circuit. The train skips all the road traffic, which is the biggest win on Sunday.

The cheaper KLIA Transit also works if you're boarding at Bandar Tasik Selatan, Putrajaya or Salak Tinggi.

Option 2: Event shuttle from other pick-up points

Shuttles also run from Mitsui Outlet Park, KLIA Long Term Car Park and Bandar Baru Enstek. Shuttle hours are listed as 7 AM to midnight, 2–4 October — check the latest boarding info before you go.

Option 3: Drive

Coming from KL, PJ, Seremban or JB? Use the E6 or E7 and follow the KLIA signs. Only park in designated areas — at past Sepang race weekends, police have towed and fined cars left by the roadside. Leave very early on Sunday.

Option 4: Grab / taxi

Easy going in, painful coming out. Expect surge pricing and long waits after the race. If you use e-hailing, set a meeting point a short walk from the main gate, or wait out the traffic at the concert.

What to do at F1 Malaysia 2026: your 3-day game plan

Friday 2 October — Explore day

Friday is the most relaxed day, so use it well:

  • Walk the circuit and find the best viewing spots from your stand before the crowds arrive
  • Visit the fan zone and merchandise stalls while the queues are short
  • Watch FP1 and FP2 — you'll see teams testing setups and drivers pushing hard
  • Figure out your shuttle, toilets, food stalls and a group meeting point

Saturday 3 October — Qualifying + Axwell

  • Arrive before midday and settle into your spot for FP3 (12:30 PM)
  • Qualifying at 4 PM is often the most intense hour of the weekend — who takes pole at Sepang?
  • Stay on for Axwell at the circuit stage in the evening

Sunday 4 October — Race day + Martin Garrix

  • Get to the circuit early — security queues build fast on race day
  • Catch the support races and pre-race build-up
  • Lights out at 3 PM — 56 laps of Sepang's long straights and heavy braking into Turn 1
  • Stay for Martin Garrix's post-race show — you'll dodge the worst of the exit traffic as a bonus

🎤 Concert note: concert access is tied to race weekend ticket holders — you need a valid race ticket to attend.

Where to watch: quick stand guide

  • Main Grandstand — covered; start/finish straight, pit lane, grid and podium. Best for first-timers.
  • K1 Grandstand — covered; Turns 1–2, the big braking zone and first-lap battles.
  • F Grandstand — covered; the tight Turns 7–8. Cheapest seat with shade.
  • B & C Hillstands — open grass banks; fast corners and back straight. Great value, zero shelter.
  • G Hillstand — open grass at Turns 4–6. From RM200 for 3 days, MyKad holders only.

Only buy tickets from official channels — the official F1 / Bahrain International Circuit ticketing or their authorised partners. Tickets are non-refundable, so beware of resellers on social media.

10 pro tips to survive (and enjoy) Sepang

  1. Hydrate before you're thirsty. Buy water inside and keep sipping all day.
  2. Arrive early, leave late. The worst traffic is right after the chequered flag.
  3. Rain is part of the show. Sepang storms have created some of F1's wildest races — the event runs rain or shine.
  4. Pick a group meeting point — phone signal drops when the crowd peaks.
  5. Download the F1 app for live timing so you can follow positions while cars are out of view.
  6. Leave the radio scanner at home — they're banned. Use the app instead.
  7. Protect little ears. Kids need proper ear defenders.
  8. Wear your colours — team shirts and caps make great photos (and conversation starters).
  9. Charge everything the night before.
  10. Screenshot your shuttle times and ticket in case data goes down.

Making a trip of it
